Head Teacher Runs London Marathon for Autistic Students

Jane Jackson, head teacher at specialist school Heathermount in Sunningdale, is running the London Marathon in April to fundraise for her pupils.

On being appointed in her new role at Heathermount, Jane promptly made the decision to run the challenging 26 miles in aid of The Disabilities Trust - the charity in which the school is a division. Her motivation to take on this mammoth challenge is the hope that the children at the school will be encouraged to get active and get involved in community events.

Heathermount School caters for children and young people, aged 5-19, who have a range of autistic spectrum conditions. The school creates the opportunity for students to become independent, confident adults who have the skills and knowledge to make a difference to their own lives. The school is part of the Autism Spectrum Partners’ division of The Disabilities Trust, which provides residential and day services to meet the needs of individuals with autism, brain injury, physical disability and learning disability.

Jane will be in good company on Sunday 22nd April as eight other fundraisers will be running the marathon in aid of the Trust. For taking part in the largest annual one-day fundraising event in the world, they have each pledged to raise at least £1500 for the charity. There will be triple efforts from Heathermount as Allan Durrans, husband of the school’s assistant head teacher, and teacher Claudette O’Brien, join The Disabilities Trust team.

Jane said: “I knew I wanted to fundraise for the Trust as soon as I joined. The adults and children who use its services are at the heart of everything it does. I hope my fundraising efforts inspire my pupils as well as contribute to new resources for the school. It’s a big challenge for me, but I can’t wait to tackle it!”
