Secondary maths

Student filling in data on a White Board chart

Our secondary students have worked hard in maths this term on a wide range of topics from geometric reasoning to ratios and even enjoyed some practical maths collecting data on our baby chicks.  Here's an insight into what they have been learnt:

Mercury

Mercury class worked diligently on constructing congruent shapes using a ruler and compass at the start of this term. They used the properties of a circle to create triangles and quadrilaterals to specific specifications. For example:

Lastly, they focused on Geometric reasoning with triangles, various quadrilaterals and polygons, plus investigating the angles created when a pair of parallel lines are cut by a transversal.

Neptune and Saturn

Neptune and Saturn focused on the Data Handling cycle, using the chicks as a real-life example of data collecting, display, analysis and drawing conclusions.

The last part of the term they looked at the different methods for analysing data, in particular the different types of averages. The students analysed the data from a situation to determine the best type of average to use and then were able to explain their choice. For example: to calculate the average age of a person at the birthday party below and explain their choice of average (mean, median or mode).

Jupiter and Pluto

Jupiter and Pluto worked on Enlargement and Similarity, Solving Ratio and Proportion Problems, and Rates. They applied enlargement and similarity to changing the aspect ratio of photographs and scale diagrams. Ratio and proportion were also used to increase or decrease recipes to feed different numbers of people and to find the best buy on shopping items. Rates looked at exchange rates, but also touched on the connection between Maths and Science with Density and Flow.

Mars

Mars, our GCSE class, have all completed their GCSE exams, with results available on Thursday 21st August 2025. They have all worked very hard on their studies and we can’t wait to celebrate with them as they collect their results
