Art in Term 3

It has been another great term in art. Find out what students have learnt in the article below and see more examples of their artwork in our Art in Term 3 photo Gallery.

Cherry Class

Cherry Class have been working hard this term to create a book based on colour.  Each week they have been exploring a different colour and material or technique.  They have used such materials as gelli printing, plasticine printing and tissue paper collage.  The results were bound into their own rainbow book of colour.

Apple Class

Pupils in Apple Class have been creating artwork inspired by the theme of Holidays. They learnt how to blend warm coloured paints to produce a sunset background. Using oil pastels and watercolours, they applied the resist method to create large palm trees, before adding background details with black fineliners. The children were extremely proud of their finished pieces.

Next, the class will be developing their skills further by producing a painting inspired by a rainy British holiday.

Oak, Willow and Pine Classes

Pupils in these classes have used their creativity and imagination to design their own birds. They have produced a range of exciting outcomes and are now in the process of creating 3D versions of their designs. Along the way, pupils have learnt how to use papier-mâché neatly, cover the body of their bird with coloured tissue paper, and cut feathers from coloured paper. This project provides a fantastic introduction to the design process, helping pupils transform ideas from 2D into 3D, while also developing fine motor skills in a variety of ways.

Elm Class

Elm Class has been producing some fantastic artwork, and we are very proud of the work they are creating. Pupils used acrylic paints to create warm and cool colour backgrounds on canvas boards. They then traced the outline of a bird onto their canvas and added detailed drawings of leaves and flowers. To finish, pupils are carefully painting the background negative space white, an activity that helps develop control and precision when using a paintbrush. We are looking forward to seeing the finished results.

Beech Class

Beech Class have been researching a country of their choice. Following their research, they created two designs for an Envelope from Abroad. This will help them to create a collage inside a real envelope, based on the facts they discovered about their chosen country, such as food, clothing and famous monuments.

Mars Class

The theme for Mars Class this term is Pop Art Self-Portraits. Pupils began the project by learning about facial proportions and creating pencil drawings of their own self-portraits. After exploring the work of Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, they used photographs of themselves as a starting point to recreate his distinctive style. This project has helped pupils learn about one of the most influential art movements in history, while also developing greater precision and attention to detail in their work. The final results are set to be bold and striking.

Mercury Class

Mercury pupils have been exploring a range of materials and techniques through the theme of Sweets. They developed their observational drawing skills by learning how to draw basic sweet shapes, the photos show their work before and after the lesson. This helped pupils recognise the improvements they can make in a short space of time.

Pupils were then challenged to draw a variety of real sweets placed in front of them, using their newly acquired skills. Next, they used a grid system to enlarge an image of jelly beans and learnt how to use oil pastels to create a 3D effect, producing some excellent results. The project will conclude with a study of the work of artist Claes Oldenburg, followed by pupils creating their own 3D sweet sculptures.

Saturn and Neptune Classes

Pupils have been introduced to Samchykivka art, a traditional Ukrainian art style characterised by flowing, swirly leaves and flowers. After learning about the history of this distinctive style, pupils were taught how to draw the individual elements before designing their own Samchykivka inspired artwork. Although some pupils initially found the structured rules of the style challenging, they showed great perseverance. The next step will be to paint their final designs onto canvas using Ukrainian gouache paints.

Earth Class

Earth Class have shown how independent they can be when generating ideas during the Windmill project. They learnt about four different artists who used circles in their work: Yayoi Kusama, Wassily Kandinsky, Sonia Delaunay and Gustav Klimt. Using the artists’ work as inspiration, the pupils developed their own creative responses in the shape of a windmill. Fantastic work and excellent control of materials throughout.

Year 10 NCFE

Year 10 pupils are coming to the end of their Nature Forms project and have produced some wonderful lino prints prior to their final piece. Lino printing is a new technique for all of the pupils.  They began by using their initial sketchbook studies to develop abstract designs for their lino blocks. Using lino cutting tools, pupils carefully cut away the first layer and completed an initial print before cutting a second layer and printing over the top. This process has resulted in some beautiful outcomes. Their focus, commitment and strong work ethic throughout the project have been very impressive.

Artwork for Children's Mental Health Week

In preparation for Children’s Mental Health Week, every pupil, along with some members of staff, had the opportunity to contribute a piece of artwork for a whole school display. This year’s theme is “This Is My Place.” Pupils were encouraged to think about a place or moment in time where they feel a sense of belonging and to represent this as a Polaroid-style image.  These come together as snapshots of meaningful moments. The results are deeply personal, creative, and wonderfully varied.
