Art in Term 5

Students have been very creative in Term 5 and learnt lots of new artistic skills and techniques.  See our Art in Term 5 gallery for more pictures.  More regular updates are available on Instagram @heathermount_art

Cherry Class is currently bringing imaginative monster creations to life. Pupils began by designing unique monsters using geometric shapes and then selecting their favourite designs to recreate on a larger scale through painting. These exciting designs will then be transformed into 3D papier-mâché sculptures.

Apple Class has been exploring the world of superheroes by designing their own superhero identities. After studying comic book heroes, pupils created personalised shields, masks, and capes. They are now using papier-mâché techniques to construct 3D shields based on their original designs, with all elements of their superhero creations eventually becoming three-dimensional.

Willow, Oak, and Pine Classes have been developing self-portraits while learning about colour mixing to accurately create their own skin tones. Pupils also used research skills to gather images of things that are meaningful to them, which were collaged inside their portraits to represent their thoughts, interests, and personalities.

Elm Class has been introduced to agamographs, creating their own Op Art-inspired pieces. This project has encouraged pupils to work carefully, patiently, and with precision. Their finished artworks cleverly reveal different images depending on the viewing angle.

Beech Class has been studying the work of the American artist Keith Haring. Inspired by his distinctive style, pupils developed creative visual representations of the Heathermount values. They then selected their strongest design to enlarge and paint.

Earth Class has been experimenting with graffiti-inspired typography by designing their names using an online graffiti font generator. Pupils then incorporated their designs into decorative fence post artwork, enhanced with foliage details.

Mars Class has been learning about the symbolism and cultural significance of mandalas. After watching Buddhist monks create intricate sand mandalas, pupils explored the concept of impermanence. They used their names as inspiration to design personal mandalas, while developing coloured pencil blending techniques. The next stage of their project will involve creating radial polyblock print mandalas.

Mercury Class has been focusing on developing painting techniques through the creation of polarised animal paintings. Pupils have explored colour values and used digital tools to manipulate animal photographs before transferring their designs onto canvas boards. This project is helping them refine their precision and control when painting detailed areas.

Saturn and Neptune Classes are currently engaged in a self-portrait project that combines technical drawing skills with art history. Pupils first learnt to draw self-portraits with correct proportions before exploring how significant life events influenced famous artists’ work. Beginning with Pablo Picasso’s Blue Period, pupils selected colours to represent their own moods. Future lessons will explore the works of Roy Lichtenstein and Henri Matisse, examining how personal experiences shaped their artistic styles.

Year 10 NCFE students are currently working on their second unit, centred around the theme of cakes. They have been experimenting with a range of materials and techniques and are now independently developing their own small-scale final pieces based on their research.
