Highlights of Term 5 - Lower School

Here is a summary of just some of the things that children in our lower school have been doing this term. Do look at our Highlights of Term 5 - Lower School Gallery for lots of photos.
Foundation
Apple
In English, we have been exploring acrostic poems. The children enjoyed learning how to use each letter of a word to start a new line, creating thoughtful and imaginative poems. We have focused on describing people and ideas in fun and meaningful ways.
In topic, we have been learning about real-life superheroes who have made a difference in the world. We have found out about inspiring individuals such as Rosa Parks, who stood up for fairness and equality, and Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon. We have also enjoyed comparing these real-life heroes with pretend superheroes from stories, as well as familiar Marvel characters, thinking about what makes someone a hero.

In science, we have been exploring our five senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. The children have taken part in hands-on investigations to help them understand how we use our senses to learn about the world around us.
It has been a fantastic term of discovery and creativity, and we are proud of all the children’s hard work and enthusiasm.
Cherry
Cherry Class have had a fantastic time learning all about superheroes this term. We have explored what superheroes can do, the special powers they might have, and what they wear to help them save the day. The children had lots of fun designing and making their own superhero costumes and were very proud to show them off. We particularly loved reading Supertato and learning all about how he stopped the Evil Pea. The story inspired lots of imaginative play and wonderful discussions in class.
In English, we have been writing all about superheroes, creating our own superhero characters and describing their powers and adventures. The children have worked hard to use exciting vocabulary and share their imaginative ideas in their writing.
In maths, we have been focusing on numbers 7–10 and have been practising addition and subtraction through practical activities, games, and songs. The children have worked really hard and are becoming much more confident with their number skills.
We also had a very exciting visit from the circus, which the children absolutely loved. It was wonderful to see everyone joining in, laughing, and enjoying the different performances and activities.

Primary
Pine
Pine class have focussed on a number of different places around the world, following their teddy bear Reggie on his adventures! They explored the UK, France and the USA. The class researched these countries to help Reggie on his travels, exploring the climate, popular foods and even some silly facts. In science, they planted their own sunflowers and watched them grow. They also investigated what plants need to survive and how each part of the plant is important. They visited Tesco to buy some ingredients for their cooking, then made some yummy chocolate mug cakes.
Willow
Willow class visited RHS Garden Wisley as part of their science topic all about plants. They had a great day exploring the vast gardens, from jungle habitats in the glasshouse to pond habitats. They also enjoyed exploring the range of fruits and vegetables in the allotment, including lettuce, onions and peas, as well as apples in the orchard. It was a great opportunity for them to apply their science learning to real life, and successfully identify the stages that many plants were in within their life cycles!

Elm
Elm class have been exploring rocks and fossils in science. Throughout the topic, the children have taken part in a range of exciting hands-on activities to deepen their understanding of the world beneath our feet. They created edible soil to demonstrate the different layers of soil and learnt about the role each layer plays.
The class also investigated how fossils are formed and stepped into the shoes of palaeontologists as they examined and explored different fossils. The children thoroughly enjoyed discovering how fossils can teach us about life from millions of years ago, and they showed great curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the topic.
Beech
Beech class took cuttings during their science lesson, as they were learning about plant reproduction. These cuttings will provide examples of asexual reproduction.

The class took a trip out to a local café, where the children enjoyed an afternoon developing and practising their social skills.
Oak
Oak class enjoyed working outdoors during science lessons. They identified trees that they had previously learnt about, using their knowledge of different tree features. The class took tree rubbings that identified different types of trees, including evergreen and deciduous.
Our lower school children have also been very busy sowing seeds, planting seedlings and creating beautiful hanging baskets and planters around school in horticulture and forest school. In music, they have loved trying out an exciting new instrument – an accordion! Plus, Oak and Elm classes have been working hard to learn the songs for their concert on 18th June. They enjoyed having Bimbi from Berkshire Music Trust visit for a special rehearsal.
In PE the students have developed their skills in kwik cricket. Finally, y ou can see all the lovely things they've got up to in Drama and Art in our separate news articles. It has been another busy term!
