Business and Administration at Heathermount

Students at Heathermount can work towards nationally recognised vocational qualifications, including the NCFE Level 1 Certificate in Business Administration and the Level 2 Diploma in Skills for Business. These qualifications are designed to develop the practical skills, knowledge, and confidence needed for future employment, further education, supported internships, and apprenticeships.

The courses focus on real-life workplace skills such as professional communication, customer service, teamwork, organisation, time management, record keeping, problem-solving, and the effective use of business technology. Students learn how businesses operate and develop an understanding of the expectations and responsibilities of working in a professional environment.

A key strength of the programme is its emphasis on work readiness. Students are encouraged to develop independence, resilience, professionalism, and employability skills that will support a successful transition into adult life and the workplace. Learning is practical and engaging, with students completing vocational assignments, projects, presentations, and workplace-based activities that reflect real business situations.

To enhance their learning, students have opportunities to work alongside the Heathermount School Administration Team, gaining valuable first-hand experience of administrative duties within a professional setting. This may include supporting office tasks, handling information appropriately, communicating with staff, organising resources, and developing an understanding of day-to-day business operations. These experiences help students apply their classroom learning in a meaningful context while building confidence and transferable workplace skills.

Assessment is portfolio-based rather than examination-led, allowing students to demonstrate their skills and understanding through practical tasks and evidence gathered throughout the course.

By completing these qualifications, students leave with recognised vocational credentials, practical workplace experience, and the essential employability skills needed to progress confidently into further education, training, or employment. The programme provides a strong foundation for becoming capable, confident, and work-ready young adults.

This term, our Business Administration students successfully completed Unit 221, which focusses on using office equipment safely and effectively while following manufacturers' instructions and organisational procedures.

As part of their learning, students gained hands-on experience using a range of office equipment, with a particular focus on binding and shredding machines. They supported the school's administrative team by carrying out real workplace tasks, including securely shredding confidential documents containing personal information and binding teaching resources for staff use.

These practical activities helped students develop valuable workplace skills, understand the importance of confidentiality and data protection, and gain confidence in using office equipment in a professional environment. Well done to all students for their hard work and commitment this term.
