Construction at Heathermount

Our construction students are developing valuable practical skills with SATRO and learning essential techniques used in the building and maintenance industry.
As part of the course, students have been constructing a mock-up wall complete with a skirting board, giving them the opportunity to practise a range of decorating, repair and finishing skills in a practical setting.
The students have learnt how to repair damaged surfaces, filling holes using plasterboard cut-outs and Polyfilla before preparing the wall for painting. They then painted the wall, applied primer to the skirting board and finished it with a coat of gloss paint, developing their understanding of the importance of preparation and attention to detail in achieving a professional finish.

The project is designed to help students build confidence, develop problem-solving skills and gain experience in using tools and materials safely and effectively. By working through each stage of the process, students are learning how different construction tasks come together to complete a finished project.
There is more to come. The next stage will see students build a shelf unit, which will then be securely attached to the wall. To complete the project, an electrical light fitting will be added, bringing the finished display together and showcasing the range of skills the students have developed.
Through this hands-on learning experience, students are gaining practical knowledge that can support their future learning, independence and potential career pathways. The project highlights the value of learning by doing, allowing students to see the results of their hard work while developing useful skills for everyday life and the workplace.
A huge thank you to SATRO for visiting our school each week and enabling us to offer our students the opportunity to learn these skills.
