Art in Term 5

Students have really enjoyed Art this term and have taken part in a wide range of projects.  You will find more pictures in our Art in Term 5 Photo Gallery.

Cherry Class have been developing their imaginations in their art lessons.  Each pupil was given a cuddly toy as the focus for the project.  Pupils were asked to imagine and create a life and environment for their toy through drawing. This activity promotes the development of skills such as dexterity, hand-eye coordination, creating narratives and nurtures pupils' curiosity about the world around them.

Apple Class have been creating robots through their use of different materials and techniques.  These have included drawings, collage and collagraph printing.  The class has been really proud of their outcomes and even named their robots.

This year, each Primary class has been introduced to The National Gallery’s initiative called “Take One Picture”.  Primary schools across the country, who wish to participate, are introduced to one picture from the gallery’s collection. This year we have studied “The Regatta on the Grand Canal” by Canaletto.  This is a pupil-led project.  They were introduced to small sections of the painting in order to develop ideas for the project before the whole painting was revealed.  This generated excellent discussions amongst pupils and fantastic ideas for art work.

Each class’s response to Canaletto’s painting is exciting and varied.  Beech class are designing seagulls in army uniform and will then be making small seagull sculptures.  Elm  class discussed fantasy castles and the patterns seen in Moscow’s Red Square.  As a result, they are looking at the artist Hundertwasser to design their own patterned buildings.   A member of Pine class thought that the painting showed people looking for sea monsters.  This fantastic idea has been the starting point for their project and as a class they are creating their own sea monsters.  A pupil in Oak class saw what they thought was a boat made from a pineapple so as a result they have created boats made from images of fruit.  These will be photoshopped into Canaletto’s work, replacing the existing boats in his painting.   This project has enabled each class to work collaboratively, learn how to talk about art work and generate ideas from a given starting point.  I cannot wait to share the results, they are going to look fantastc.

Key Stage 3

Pluto and Jupiter class are continuing with the Dogs Project.  This project mainly focuses on making 3-dimensional work and improving pupils’ fine motor skills.  They have designed a 3D dog that they are making using paper mache.  Each dog is starting to develop its own personality and will be displayed as part of Heathermount’s Dog Show.

Saturn and Neptune classes are working on the Sweets project.  They have been learning how to draw 3-dimensional shapes by drawing real sweets. As part of this project, pupils are analysing the work of Pop Art and will develop their own prints in the style of Warhol.

Mercury class have learnt about how and why Buddhist monks create mandalas.  They have created their own mandala using a repeat pattern of their name.  I am so pleased with their outcomes because they reused the skills of blending coloured pencils that they learnt in a previous project.  Next, pupils will be producing repeat pattern polyblock prints of their mandalas.

Earth class have finished an astronaut picture. They learnt to draw the outline of the person step-by-step and used oil pastels to create the reflection in the visor of the helmet.  All of the outcomes were excellent.
