Art in Term 4

Here is a summary of what our students have been learning in art. More regular updates are available on Instagram  heathermount_art and you can see lots of photos in our Art in Term 4 Gallery.

Cherry Class

Cherry Class have been exploring mini-beasts in their art lessons. They began by experimenting with mark-making using a range of tools and different paint colours. Students then used their painted paper to cut out butterfly shapes. To create the background, they used forks dipped in paint to make flower patterns. Following this, the pupils made and painted clay caterpillars, enjoying the opportunity to explore and feel the texture of the clay.

Oak, Willow and Pine Classes

Students have completed their amazing 3D birds. This was a long project that required repetition and perseverance and everyone worked incredibly hard. The birds’ bodies were first created using paper mâché, before students carefully cut and added individual feathers, helping to develop their fine motor skills. Each bird shows its own unique character and looks fantastic. They will be proudly displayed in the school

Elm Class

Students in Elm Class have studied the work of Sergi Cadenas and are producing their own agamograph.  This is a type of art work that changes depending on what side it is viewed from.  One side is based on Op Art and the work of Bridget Riley.  Pupils have worked very hard to make sure that their work is the neatest it can be.  They have done a brilliant job so far and we are looking forward to seeing the completed art work.

Beech Class

Beech Class are learning about the artist Keith Haring. They are currently practising how to form the bold, energetic figures that Haring is well known for. Once they have mastered these shapes, pupils will design their own Haring-inspired paintings to represent our school values.

Mars Class

Students in Mars Class have been very busy in their art lessons. They have completed their self-portraits inspired by Roy Lichtenstein, which look fantastic. During this project, pupils learnt how to combine different materials within a single artwork. Their current project is a painting inspired by the world of Harry Potter. They practised mixing tints and shades before using them to paint a background.  They will then use black ink to create a silhouette of Hogwarts.

Mercury Class

Mercury students have completed their ice cream sculptures inspired by Claes Oldenburg and they look good enough to eat! Pupils worked confidently with paper mâché and were involved in decision-making at every stage of the process. They mixed the correct paint colours to match their original 2D designs and came up with creative ways to add flakes, sprinkles and sauce. The results are amazing.

Saturn and Neptune Classes

Students in these classes have finished their gouache paintings inspired by Samchykivka art. They learned the traditional rules for constructing and painting a Samchykivka design and applied these to create their own artwork. Although some parts of the project were challenging, students persevered and produced some beautiful results.

Earth Class

After learning about mandalas and how and why they are created by Buddhist monks, students designed their own mandalas using a repeating pattern of their names. They showed excellent precision and care. The next stage has been to create a radial polyblock print of a mandala, which pupils have begun to complete.

Year 10 NCFE

Year 10 students  have started a new project based on cakes. This topic is a great way to develop observational drawing, painting and oil pastel techniques. Pupils are experimenting with a range of materials to represent the textures they can see on the cakes. Although drawing real cakes placed in front of them was very tempting, they did a fantastic job staying focused and producing some excellent work.

Red Noses

This year, every pupil received a red nose which they could decorate with their own personalised theme. Pupils really enjoyed this creative activity, and each design was completely unique.
