Art in Term 2
Students have learnt about an array of artists, explored different techniques and really enjoyed getting creative in art this term. Here is a summary of just some of the things they have been doing. Do look at our Art Photo Gallery for more images.
Apple Class have been learning about portraits and self-portraits. They looked at the work of the artist Polina Belenchuk and created their own abstract versions of her work. This helped pupils to acknowledge how the proportions in her work looked incorrect and helped them to draw their own self-portraits using the correct proportions the following week.
Willow and Pine classes have been learning about mark-making using different materials. They have been making different marks with paint by dabbing with a sponge, using controlled brush strokes and making small dots with cotton buds. These techniques are coming together to produce a painting of a wave on a rough sea using warm and cool colours.
Beech class have been exploring Egyptian art. They created their own name using hieroglyphics and then used a grid system to help them enlarge an image of an Egyptian cat. They used metallic pencils for the first time to add warm or cool colours to their cats.
Pluto and Jupiter class have been using their amazing imaginations to produce a watercolour painting based on the work of Rene Magritte. Pupils had to transform a high heel shoe using objects from nature. They were then taught how to draw a room using one point perspective which became a home for their fantasy shoe.
Saturn and Neptune classes have completed a windmill project. Each week they were taught about an artist who used dots or circular shapes in their work (Yayoi Kusama, Wassily Kandinsky, Sonia Delaunay and Gustav Klimt). Pupils were then asked to create their own response to that artist on a section of the windmill.
Mercury class took two lessons out of their self-portrait project to make some amazing wooden snowmen. Our Site Manager, Craig, kindly cut the wood into sections for the pupils to paint and assemble. Each snowman ended up with their own personality from the same starting point. Pupils got to take these home afterwards, making a lot of staff very jealous!
Earth class have shown a lot of patience this term. After drawing feathers from observation, they created a set of amazing 3D birds. They carefully selected the colours that they wanted to use to cut out individual feathers for the wings. Pupils will use evidence from this project to achieve the Arts Award Discover certificate. As part of the Silver Arts Award, Mars group were lucky enough to work with a visiting artist, Emma Sweeting, for a morning. Emma showed pupils how to simplify their drawings to produce line drawings of sea creatures. They did really well and worked outside their comfort zone. The work that they produced will be used by Primary pupils later in the year. The class also took this opportunity to hold a question and answer session with Emma about her career which they will use as evidence for their next unit.
