Science Week

The theme for Science Week this year was 'Time' - a fitting theme as it was the 30th anniversary!

Key Stage 3 began the week by exploring what time is, and whether it really exists - we had lots of interesting discussions thinking about time travel, why time can only move in one direction, and exploring how time and gravity are linked. The students enjoyed exploring a timeline of the Universe, and creating a timeline of the key events in their own lives.

We then moved on to look at biomagnification and how pollution can build up in a food chain over time. The students enjoyed playing a fun game where they simulated a food chain, and had to play rock, paper, scissors to win their food - at the end of the game we had the big reveal where they found out if they had fallen victim to DDT or not!

In their following lesson, the students had a lot of fun exploring how to create their own 10 second timer to accurately explore a 10 second interval - we had some really creative designs and the students really enjoyed using ramps, marbles, sand, paper etc to get creative.

We finished off the week with working on some posters for the Science Week Competition - these posters are due on the 25th March if students would like to complete these at home and enter the competition - prizes up for grabs include a crystal growing kit, a volcano kit, and a bubbles kit!

The students also had the opportunity to watch some fun demo experiments including making nylon, elephant's toothpaste and the howling jelly baby!
