Autism Awareness Week at Heathermount

What is Autism Awareness Week?

The National Autistic Society was created to support autistic adults and children everywhere by increasing understanding and creating a more autism-friendly UK. That is why they are launching their first ever Schools’ Autism Awareness Week in 2016: to engage adults and children across the country and to invite everyone to get involved!

What are we doing?

From the 14th – 18th March, we are celebrating Autism Awareness and have planned a number of activities during the week including; going into the community, visiting local businesses as well as  having ‘Onesie Wednesday’ to celebrate standing out and being different. We will also be having assemblies for our primary and secondary students with ex-student and current Teaching Assistant, Michael Manley, who will be providing us with an insight as to how he has achieved a successful career and how he has overcome any difficulties along the way.

To share experiences of autism from our students and teachers, we will also be creating an autism creative writing wall where our school community will be invited to create a paragraph or two about how autism has affected them. Parents are invited to join in too.
