Purpose and Aims of Study

The first year will be an introductory year where your son or daughter will be given further skills to ready themselves for the GCSE qualification. They will then start one other or both GCSE courses. There could be an option for your son or daughter to take the functional skills levels 1 and 2 route as an alternative.

Assessment Details

For the award of the GCSE in English Literature and Language students must complete all exams. The first year is based on the GCSE course criteria but addresses any gaps in students' knowledge with a view to supporting them to achieve their potential during the course of the qualification.

English Literature

Paper 1: Shakespeare and the 19th-century novel - written exam (1 hour 45 minutes)
Paper 2: Modern texts and poetry - written exam (2 hours 15 minutes)

English Language

Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing - written exam (1 hour 45 minutes)
Paper 2: Writers' Viewpoints and Perspectives - written exam (1 hour 45 minutes)
